Alchemy of Time—Reclaiming what has been Abandoned
Illumigarden, in Mill Valley, Features Artist Judyth Greenburgh on May 6th

How did Judyth Greenburgh, a successful creative director in advertising from London, find her way to Darwin, a remote mining ghost town on the edge of Death Valley?

Like many others, she felt soothed, inspired and held by the bareness and openness of the land. It is in Darwin that she could relax into and listen to life and it is here that she began to live her real calling. Artist.

In Darwin, a mining town from the 1870’s, she spent hours wandering the canyons and mountains finding life as it was, a way of living that had passed. As she came upon abandon cars, tires, bed frames and the skeletons of miner’s cabins, she was drawn into a relationship to the story of what had been left.

About the Art
What called her creative process into action was the meeting and seeing of piles of rusted tin cans, literally tossed out the window and left. In these dumps she saw the scalability of the repetitive shapes of the thousands of cans, some over 85 years old, and felt attracted to the uniformity of the rust color, how the dents cast shadows and the how the alchemy of time turned trash into treasures. She felt she had found rusty jewels and calls this genre– Apocalyptic Art; Birth from the Ashes.

Picture
“Darwin’s post apocalypse landscape is studded with mines, and acres of old tin can dumps. I was intrigued by the oxidation of time. How metal rusts, copper patinas. The juxtaposition of shine with rust/ patina. How this layer transforms common trash into something worth considering,” Judyth Greenburgh, Artist

She gathered her jewels and began lay them out in patterns. The repeating forms taking a shape in themselves making a statement about something we usually ignore.
