Copper creates a patina over time. This, unlike rust actually protects the copper from corrosion. Copper patinas to many different colors depending on the elements it's exposed to. Air and oxygen will turn it a mottled brown and bronze. If you like the green Verdigris it is achievable with simple kitchen chemistry.. I clean the copper with detergent, making sure it is grease free. & avoid touching with bare hands. I dip it in white vinegar, let it air dry, then get a bunch of paper towels, spray a mix of 1 part vinegar to 2 parts ammonia over the copper. Sprinkle or dissolve sea salt over the the top. With the paper towels soaked, I wrap the copper piece inside making sure it's completely covered, then place in an air tight plastic zip lock bag. I live in Death Valley 0 - it's hot an sunny so I then place the piece in the hot sun for about 2 - 3 days. Check on it after 2 days to see if it needs touching up. Let the verdigris piece dry in the sun, DO NOT try and wash off the patina yet. Leave it exposed for a day or 2. I use Museum grade wax to protect my piece afterwards
